About Our Residents

Residents of Rainbow Acres, called “Ranchers” come from all across the United States, from an Alaska homestead to Florida, from Long Island, New York to Hawaii, and represent 22 States. Rainbow Acres has also served individuals from Sweden, Canada, Japan and Brazil. They come from all faith communities. Every Rancher has untapped potential and unexplored talents.

We serve adults with a wide variety and degree of cognitive and developmental disabilities, including but not limited to Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Fragile X and within the Autism spectrum.

Ranchers range from 18 years of age to well into their 80’s. It’s not the chronological age that is important as much as understanding the developmental age and empowering each individual to explore their talents, find meaningful work and discover a purpose for their lives. One is never too old to discover new talents. Imagine learning life and vocational skills that can be utilized as a volunteer or as a valued employee in the community.

The arrival of a new Rancher is one of the most exciting events at Rainbow Acres. Even during lunch on their first visit a prospective Rancher is greeted with smiles and excitement by many current Ranchers and is often asked, “Are you coming to Rainbow?” followed up with an affirmation: “We want you to live in our house!”

Imagine being told all of your life all the skills and abilities you cannot do, and then to be greeted with enthusiasm. One Rancher with CP was invited to participate in the Fine Arts Painting Class. For the first two classes he just stared at the canvas. With love and encouragement from the instructors and his peers his life has been transformed. He began to develop his own painting technique and distinctive style. Today his paintings are among the most popular in the art exhibits and sales.

In the interview process, a prospective Rancher is never asked, “What can’t you do?” rather, “What can you do?” and most of all, “What would you like to do?”

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RANCHERS: providing opportunities for personal growth, offering them freedom of choice, empowering all to achieve personal goals, having friends who accept one another unconditionally (often for the first time in their lives), and discovering purpose in life. Come and see the women and men discovering joy in their lives, living in the safety and security of the community of Rainbow Acres!
