Neurodevelopmental Therapy at Rainbow Acres
As part of its mission to provide Ranchers (residents) with holistic care, Rainbow Acres provides a groundbreaking form of neurological habilitation known as Neurodevelopmental Therapy.
Through rigorous physical exercises, Ranchers improve their visual, auditory and tactile awareness and sensitivity, and find greater comfort in the world in which they live.
Neuro has been used extensively in children and in stroke patients, but its use in the special needs community is quite new. As far as we know, Rainbow Acres is the only community of its kind utilizing the Neurodevelopmental approach to improve the lives of adults with developmental disabilities.
Rainbow has barely scratched the surface of its possibilities, but the Ranchers are already seeing encouraging results. Improved muscle strength, balance and coordination are just a small part of the story. Neurodevelopmental Therapy builds neural pathways which enhance language skills. Vocabulary and pronunciation of words, along with greater ease of speaking has allowed communication to flourish among Ranchers and their parents, as well as with Rainbow staff and their peers.
Neuro and equine training coordinators are now working together to create positive results for Ranchers in many areas of their lives, leading to higher self esteem and confidence as skills grow. Participation in the programs have also uncovered hypersensitive hearing and vision concerns that have now been addressed.
